Why Evening Adhkar Matter
The evening adhkar (azkar al-masa) are your spiritual armor for the night. Just as the morning adhkar protect you through the day, the evening remembrances provide safety, gratitude, and closeness to Allah through the hours of darkness.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was consistent with his evening adhkar and encouraged his companions to never leave them. In one narration, he said to his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): “Shall I not teach you something better than a servant?” — and then taught her a dhikr to say before sleep.
These supplications cover everything: protection from harm, gratitude for the day, seeking forgiveness for shortcomings, and preparing the soul for sleep and whatever Allah has decreed for the night.
When to Recite
The evening adhkar should be recited after Asr prayer until Maghrib. Some scholars extend this to after Maghrib.
The strongest opinion is that the evening adhkar time begins at Asr and the best time is between Asr and Maghrib. However, if you miss this window, you can still recite them up until the first third of the night.
The important thing is consistency, even if your timing isn’t perfect.
The Complete Evening Adhkar
1. Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255)
Recite once.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi in the evening will be protected until the morning.”
Transliteration: Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Adheem.
Translation: “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
2. Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Al-Falaq (113), and An-Nas (114)
Recite each three times.
These three surahs together are known as the Mu’awwidhat (the protective surahs). The Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite them into his cupped hands and blow over his body every evening.
Surah Al-Ikhlas:
Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad. Allahus-Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
Surah Al-Falaq:
Qul a’udhu bi-Rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-‘uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.
Surah An-Nas:

How Long Does This Take?
The complete evening adhkar set takes approximately 10-15 minutes when recited at a moderate pace. That’s less time than the average social media session.
If you’re just starting, begin with the first four (Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls, the protection dua, and Sayyid al-Istighfar). These are the most emphasized in the Sunnah and take only 3-4 minutes.
Building the Evening Adhkar Habit
The biggest challenge with evening adhkar isn’t knowledge — it’s consistency. Here are practical tips:
Anchor it to Asr prayer. Don’t let time pass between Asr and your adhkar. Complete them immediately after the post-prayer tasbih while you’re still sitting.
Have a dedicated spot. A prayer corner, a specific chair, a place you associate with worship. Environment shapes behavior.
Use a physical mushaf or printed card. Having the adhkar on paper in front of you removes the excuse of “I forgot what comes next.” It also keeps you off your phone during this time.
Pair it with wind-down time. The evening adhkar naturally prepare you for a calm night. Use them as the transition between your active day and your evening rest.

The Protection You’re Missing
Many of us lock our doors, set alarms, and install security cameras. But we neglect the protection that comes from the Creator of all things.
The evening adhkar are not just words. They are a shield the Prophet (peace be upon him) used every single day of his life. If he — the most protected of all people — never skipped them, what about us?
Start tonight. Even if it’s just Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls. Let the evening adhkar be the last good thing you do before the night settles in.
End your day in remembrance, and let the night carry you in peace.
