Why the Prophet Never Left Home Without These Words
There is a category of du’a the scholars call ta’awwudhat — supplications of refuge. These are not requests for something desired, but shields against something feared. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was a man of extraordinary courage who faced assassination attempts, wars, and social persecution. Yet he taught his companions to arm themselves with words every single morning and evening.
That combination — courage and supplication — is the Islamic model. You do not seek protection because you are afraid. You seek protection because you understand that all safety comes from Allah alone, and that forgetting this is itself a vulnerability.
Here are the most powerful, authentic duas for protection — organized by the threat they address.
Protection from General Harm and Evil
The Master Du’a of Protection
This supplication, known as Sayyid al-Istighfar in protective context, is perhaps the most comprehensive shield in the prophetic tradition:
Translation: O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and promise to the best of my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done.
(Bukhari)
The Evening Supplication for Complete Protection
Transliteration: A’udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says this three times in the evening will not be harmed by the sting of a scorpion that night.” (Muslim)
Recite three times each evening.
Protection from Shaytan
Shaytan’s access to us is not unlimited. The Quran and Sunnah describe specific entry points — moments of anger, arrogance, heedlessness, and desire. These supplications close those doors:
When Something Angers You
Transliteration: A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim
Translation: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) described two men who became furious with each other. He said: “I know a word — if he were to say it, what he feels would go away: A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Upon Entering the Home
Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-makhraj
Translation: O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of exiting.
Then say Bismillah upon entering. When you greet your family, this keeps Shaytan from staying the night. (Abu Dawud)
Protection from the Evil Eye (Al-‘Ayn)
The evil eye is real — affirmed explicitly in the Quran: “And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes.” (Al-Qalam 68:51). These duas offer refuge:
Al-Mu’awwidhatain: The Two Shields
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “No person who seeks protection will be protected by anything like the Mu’awwidhatayn.” (Nasa’i — authenticated)
Surah Al-Falaq (113): Seek refuge from all created evil, the darkness of night, those who blow on knots, and the envy of the envier.
Surah An-Nas (114): Seek refuge from the whisperer who withdraws — the one who whispers into the hearts of mankind.
Recite both three times after Fajr and Maghrib, and three times before sleep.
For Children and Family Members
Transliteration: U’edhuka bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah
Translation: I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and harmful creature, and from every evil eye.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used this supplication to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn. (Bukhari)
Protection When Leaving the House
Every journey begins with this supplication. It combines reliance on Allah, trust, and a declaration of His power:
Arabic: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Transliteration: Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
Translation: In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might and no power except with Allah.
“When a man goes out of his house and says this, he is told: ‘You are guided, defended, and protected.’ The devil goes far away from him.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi — graded hasan)
The Morning and Evening Shield: Ayat al-Kursi
There is no single ayah more powerful for protection than the Throne Verse:
“Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth…” (Al-Baqarah 2:255)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) told a companion: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when going to sleep, Allah will appoint a guardian over him, and no shaytan will come near him until morning.” (Bukhari)
Recite once after every obligatory prayer and once before sleep.
Protection During Distress and Fear
When you feel afraid — not of something specific but of what life might bring — this is the supplication of complete trust:
Arabic: حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Transliteration: Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal-wakeel
Translation: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.
This is the exact phrase the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said when thrown into the fire — and the fire became cool and safe. It is the phrase the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions said when people said to them: “People have gathered against you, so fear them.” Their faith only increased. (Al Imran 3:173)
A Daily Routine for Protection
The scholars of hadith identified a minimal daily routine that, when consistent, forms a comprehensive shield:
- Morning: Recite Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas — each three times.
- Morning and Evening: “A’udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq” — three times.
- Before sleep: Ayat al-Kursi once. Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times.
This takes under five minutes total. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says these in the morning will be protected until the evening, and whoever says them in the evening will be protected until the morning.” (Abu Dawud — regarding the morning/evening adhkar)
The challenge is consistency, not memorization. Apps like Nafs can prompt you at Fajr and Maghrib so these supplications become an unbreakable daily habit — until protection is something you carry into every moment without thinking.
