The birth of a child is one of life’s most precious moments in Islam. From the very first moments of life, Islamic tradition teaches us to welcome our children with specific duas and supplications that connect them to Allah’s protection and blessings. This comprehensive guide covers all the important Islamic practices and duas for newborn babies, helping you establish a spiritual foundation for your child’s life.

The Spiritual Importance of Duas for Newborns

In Islamic tradition, welcoming a newborn is not merely a biological event but a spiritual milestone. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated specific practices for newborns that parents should follow to ensure their child receives Allah’s blessings and protection from the very beginning.

Allah says in the Quran:

“Our Lord, grant us from our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us leaders of the righteous.” (Quran 25:74)

These duas and practices serve multiple purposes: they protect the child from harm, invoke Allah’s blessings, and establish the child’s connection to Islamic tradition from birth.

Tahneek: The First Practice

What is Tahneek?

Tahneek (تحنيك) is the practice of putting a small piece of date in the newborn’s mouth before breastfeeding or any other food. This beautiful Sunnah was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and has tremendous benefits for both the physical and spiritual development of the child.

How to Perform Tahneek:

  1. Take a fresh date, preferably a whole date or a pitted date
  2. Chew or soften it slightly
  3. Gently rub it on the roof of the baby’s mouth
  4. This should be done before the baby is breastfed for the first time

The Dua:

While performing tahneek, you can recite:

“اللهم بارك له” (Allahumma baarik lahu) — “O Allah, bless him/her”

The Benefits:

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed tahneek on newborns brought to him. This practice is believed to:

  • Strengthen the child spiritually
  • Begin their life with the mention of Allah’s name
  • Connect them to the Sunnah of the Prophet from birth
  • Provide natural sweetness and nutrition

The Adhan in the Newborn’s Ear

What is the Adhan?

The Adhan (اذان) is the Islamic call to prayer. One of the most beautiful Sunnahs for welcoming a newborn is to whisper the Adhan into the baby’s right ear and the Iqamah into the left ear.

The Right Ear Adhan:

Whisper into the right ear:

“الله أكبر الله أكبر، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله، أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله، حي على الصلاة، حي على الفلاح، الله أكبر الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله”

(Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah. Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulallah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulallah. Hayya ‘alas-salah, hayya ‘alal-falah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illallah.)

The Left Ear Iqamah:

Whisper into the left ear:

“الله أكبر الله أكبر، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله، حي على الصلاة، حي على الفلاح، قد قامت الصلاة، قد قامت الصلاة، الله أكبر الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله”

(Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah. Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulallah. Hayya ‘alas-salah, hayya ‘alal-falah. Qad qamatis-salah, qad qamatis-salah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illallah.)

The Spiritual Meaning:

This practice ensures that the first sounds a child hears are the words of Tawheed (Islamic monotheism) and the call to worship Allah. It marks the child’s official entry into the Muslim Ummah and establishes their spiritual identity from the first moments of life.

Duas for Protection of the Child

General Protection Dua:

“بسم الله أرقيك من كل شيء يؤذيك، ومن شر كل نفس أو عين حاسد، الله يشفيك، بسم الله أرقيك”

(Bismillahi arqika min kulli shay’in yu’adhika, wa min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘ainin hasid, Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika.)

“In the Name of Allah, I seek protection for you from every harmful thing, and from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah cure you. In the Name of Allah, I protect you.”

Dua for Ease and Blessing:

“اللهم اجعله من أحسن خلقك الله، وأسعد شخص عائلته بقضائك، وقيّضه لصالح العمل، وأعطه قلباً حكيماً، وسانّاً لسان صدق”

(Allahumma ij’alhu min ahsan khalqika al-Lah, wa as’ada shakhs ‘a’ilatihi bi-qada’ika, wa qayyidhahu li-salih al-‘amal, wa a’tihi qalban hakiman, wa sana Lisana sidq.)

“O Allah, make him/her among the best of Your creation, make him/her a source of happiness for his/her family through Your decree, grant him/her righteous deeds, give him/her a wise heart, and a truthful tongue.”

The Aqiqah: Celebrating the Child’s Birth

What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah (العقيقة) is the sacrifice made on behalf of a newborn as an act of gratitude to Allah and as a celebration of the child’s arrival. It typically takes place on the seventh day after birth.

How to Perform Aqiqah:

  1. Sacrifice one goat or sheep for a girl
  2. Sacrifice two goats or sheep for a boy (this is the preferred practice)
  3. The animal must meet the requirements of being in good health and of appropriate age
  4. The meat is distributed among family, friends, and the poor
  5. This can be done in conjunction with naming the child

The Dua for Aqiqah:

Before or during the sacrifice, you can say:

“اللهم هذه عقيقة عن (اسم الطفل)، لحمها بلحمه، وعظمها بعظمه، وخضابها بخضابه، أعوذ بك من كل مصيبة، اللهم تقبل من فلان”

(Allahumma hadhihi ‘aqiqah ‘an (name of child), lahmuha bi-lahmihi, wa ‘adhumuha bi-‘adhumihi, wa khidabuha bi-khidabihi, a’udhu bika min kulli musibah, Allahumma taqabbal min filan.)

“O Allah, this aqiqah is for (child’s name). Its flesh for his/her flesh, its bones for his/her bones, its blood for his/her blood. I seek refuge with You from every calamity. O Allah, accept from [family name].”

The Virtues of Aqiqah:

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Every child is mortgaged against his aqiqah; sacrifice for him on the seventh day, shave his head, and name him.” (Tirmidhi)

This hadith emphasizes the importance of performing aqiqah as an obligation and as a means of protection for the child.

Naming the Child

The Importance of a Good Name:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “You will be called by your names on the Day of Judgment, so give yourselves good names.” (Abu Dawood)

Dua for Choosing a Name:

“اللهم بارك لنا في هذا المولود، واجعله قرة عين، وعليه بركة، وحسن الاسم والخلق”

(Allahumma barik lana fi hadha al-mawlud, waj’alhu qurrata ‘ayn, wa ‘alayhi baraka, wa husn al-ism wa al-khulq.)

“O Allah, bless us in this newborn, make him/her a comfort to our eyes, place blessing upon him/her, and give him/her a good name and character.”

Guidelines for Naming:

  • Choose a name with good meaning in Arabic or Islamic tradition
  • Avoid names that have negative meanings
  • Consider names of the Prophets or the Companions
  • Ensure the name is easy to pronounce and remember
  • Give preference to names mentioned in the Quran and Hadith

Duas to Recite During Pregnancy and Childbirth

While these are covered more extensively elsewhere, it’s important to note that continuous dua during pregnancy and at the time of childbirth is crucial. The mother and family should frequently recite:

“ربنا آتنا من لدنك رحمة وهيء لنا من أمرنا رشداً”

(Rabbana atina min ladunka rahmatan wa hayyij lana min amrina rashda.)

“Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us right guidance in our affair.” (Quran 18:10)

Building Digital Mindfulness for Your Family

While welcoming a newborn with Islamic practices, it’s equally important to cultivate healthy digital habits that will serve your child throughout their life. The early years of childhood are crucial for developing attention spans and healthy relationships with technology.

Nafs helps families establish balanced screen time practices from the beginning. By modeling healthy digital habits as parents, you create an environment where your child can thrive both spiritually and mentally.

Practical Tips for New Parents

  1. Combine Sunnah Practices: Perform tahneek, adhan, and protective duas in sequence to create a meaningful welcoming ritual
  2. Involve Extended Family: Include grandparents and relatives in these practices to strengthen family bonds
  3. Document the Journey: Record when you perform each practice, the date of aqiqah, and the chosen name for future reference
  4. Seek Knowledge: Continue learning about Islamic parenting throughout your child’s life
  5. Make Dua Consistently: Don’t limit duas to the first days—continue making dua for your child’s well-being, guidance, and protection

Key Duas for Daily Recitation

Keep these essential duas in your daily practice as a parent:

Morning Dua:

“اللهم بك أصبحنا وبك أمسينا، وبك نحيا وبك نموت، وإليك النشور”

(Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya wa bika namutu, wa ilayka an-nushur.)

Evening Dua:

“اللهم إني أسلمت نفسي إليك، وفوضت أمري إليك”

(Allahumma inni aslamtu nafsi ilayka, wa fawwadtu amri ilayka.)
