The Moments After Salah

You have just spoken to Allah. Your forehead touched the ground in complete submission. You turned right, then left — Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah — and the salah is complete.

What happens next matters.

The moments immediately following salah are among the most spiritually charged in the day. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught a specific sequence of remembrance for these moments, preserved in authentic hadith and practiced by Muslims for over fourteen centuries.

These are not formalities. Each dhikr in this sequence carries meaning, spiritual benefit, and in many cases, promised rewards from Allah directly. Taking ten to fifteen minutes after each prayer to complete them is one of the most powerful habits a Muslim can build.

This guide covers every post-prayer dhikr with the Arabic text, transliteration, and translation — everything you need to make this practice your own.

Before You Begin: The Opening Istighfar

When you complete the tasleem, begin immediately with istighfar before turning away from the qiblah.

Arabic: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ (×3)

Transliteration: Astaghfirullah (×3)

Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah (×3)

Translation: O Allah, You are As-Salam (the Source of Peace) and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

The Core Post-Prayer Adhkar

1. Subhanallah — Glorification (×33)

Arabic: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (×33)

Transliteration: SubhanAllah (×33)

Translation: Glory be to Allah (×33)

2. Alhamdulillah — Praise (×33)

Arabic: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (×33)

Transliteration: Alhamdulillah (×33)

Translation: All praise is for Allah (×33)

3. Allahu Akbar — Greatness (×33)

Arabic:

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar (×33)

Translation: Allah is the Greatest (×33)

4. The Completing Statement (bringing the total to 100)

Translation: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and all praise, and He has power over all things.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times after each prayer, and completes it with La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah… his sins will be forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea.” (Muslim)

5. Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

Recite once. This is among the most important adhkar after salah.

Transliteration: Allahu la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhalladhee yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhumah. Wa huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Adheem.

Translation: Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death.” (An-Nasa’i — authenticated by Al-Albani)

6. Al-Mu’awwidhat: The Three Quls (After Fajr and Maghrib: ×3 each; other prayers: ×1 each)

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112)

Transliteration: Qul huwa Allahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Translation: Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Surah Al-Falaq (113)

Transliteration: Qul a’udhu bi-rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-‘uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

Translation: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.

Surah An-Nas (114)

Transliteration: Qul a’udhu bi-rabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril-waswaasil-khannas. Alladhee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-nas. Minal-jinnati wan-nas.

Translation: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer — who whispers in the breasts of mankind — from among the jinn and mankind.

7. La Ilaha Illallah Wahdahu (×10, especially after Maghrib and Fajr)

Translation: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs all dominion and all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. (×10)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says this ten times after Fajr… it will be equivalent to freeing four slaves from the children of Isma’il, and ten good deeds will be written for him, ten evil deeds will be erased, and he will be elevated ten degrees.” (Tirmidhi)

A Note on Consistency

The scholars of Islam emphasize that continuity of a small deed is better than a large deed done occasionally. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

If you complete the full sequence after every prayer, it takes roughly 10–15 minutes. If that feels like too much to start, begin with just the 33-33-33 tasbih and Ayat al-Kursi after every prayer. Build from there.

The important thing is not perfection — it is showing up, again and again, in the moments after salah, choosing remembrance over distraction.

Every salah is a conversation with Allah. The adhkar after it are your way of staying in that conversation a little longer.
